5 Common Signs of Cervical Disc Herniation

5 Common Signs of Cervical Disc Herniation

Your neck plays an important role in supporting your head and protecting the nerves that travel from your spinal cord to the rest of your body. When one of the discs in your cervical spine becomes damaged or herniated, it can place pressure on nearby nerves and lead to a variety of symptoms.

At Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute, led by Ronak D. Patel, MD, we can help identify the source of your pain and find treatment options that fit your needs.

Here are five common signs of a cervical disc herniation:

1. Persistent neck pain

One of the most common symptoms of a cervical disc herniation is ongoing neck pain. You may notice discomfort that ranges from mild and annoying to severe and limiting.

The pain can worsen when you turn your head, look up or down, or spend long periods working at a computer. Some people describe it as a deep ache, while others experience sharp pain with certain movements.

2. Pain that radiates into the shoulder or arm

A herniated disc in the neck can irritate nearby nerves, causing pain that travels beyond the neck itself.

You may feel discomfort that extends into your shoulder, upper back, arm, or even your hand. This type of radiating pain is often a clue that a nerve is being compressed rather than a simple muscle strain causing your symptoms.

3. Numbness or tingling

Many patients report a pins-and-needles sensation in their arms, hands, or fingers.

The location of the numbness or tingling often depends on which nerve is affected. These symptoms may come and go at first but can become more noticeable if the underlying problem progresses.

4. Weakness in the arm or hand

A cervical disc herniation can sometimes interfere with normal nerve function, leading to muscle weakness.

You may notice that lifting objects feels more difficult, your grip strength seems reduced, or everyday activities require more effort than usual. Weakness should never be ignored, especially when it develops alongside pain or numbness.

5. Symptoms that worsen over time

Not all neck pain follows the same path. Some issues improve on their own, but a cervical disc herniation may cause symptoms that gradually become more persistent or difficult to manage.

If your pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness continues to worsen, it may be time for a professional evaluation with Dr. Patel. Early diagnosis can help guide appropriate treatment and potentially prevent further complications.
